# Protecting the public around the job

Our jobs sit next to sidewalks, driveways, and streets, and people walk by every day. Kids, neighbors, and delivery drivers don't know our hazards the way we do. This week, let's make sure nobody outside our crew gets hurt because of our work.

## Key points

1. Set up barricades, cones, or caution tape around your work area before you start, and fix them if they get knocked down.
2. Put up warning signs where people can see them, and take them down or cover them when the hazard is gone.
3. Keep sidewalks and walkways clear of tools, cords, hoses, and material; if you must block a path, give people a safe way around.
4. Never work overhead or swing loads above people; stop and wait until the area below is clear.
5. Cover or fence holes and trenches at the end of every shift, and lock up equipment and ladders so kids can't climb them.
6. Use a spotter when backing trucks or equipment near sidewalks, driveways, or the street.
7. If someone wanders into the work zone, stop work, politely guide them out, and tell the foreman.

## Talk it over

- Where on this site are people most likely to walk into our work area?
- What do we leave behind at the end of the day that could hurt someone after we go home?
- Are any of our signs or barricades missing, hard to see, or no longer needed?

> **Remember:** If the public can reach it, block it, mark it, or fix it.
