Getting hit by a moving machine, a swinging load, or a falling tool can happen in a split second. This week we have trucks backing in, equipment moving around the site, and work going on overhead. Let's make sure everyone knows where the danger is and how to stay out of the way.

## Key points

1. Never walk behind a truck or machine that is backing up. If you must cross its path, make eye contact with the operator first and wait for a signal.
2. Wear your high-visibility vest or shirt the whole shift so operators and drivers can see you.
3. Stay out of the swing radius of excavators and other equipment. If the area is not marked, mark it or ask for it to be marked.
4. Operators: check that your backup alarm works before you start, and use a spotter when you can't see behind you.
5. Never stand under a load being lifted or under work going on above you. Wear your hard hat at all times.
6. Secure tools and materials on upper levels so nothing gets kicked or blown off the edge.
7. Before working on equipment, lower blades and buckets to the ground and shut it off.

## Talk it over

- Where on this site do people and equipment share the same path, and how can we separate them?
- Which machines here have blind spots, and who is spotting for them?
- What could fall from above where you're working today?

> **Remember:** If the operator can't see you, you're in danger. Make eye contact and stay out of the path.
